Introduction
Microsoft Company was founded by Bill Gates and Bill Allen in 1975. Microsoft emerged as one of the first providers of operation system software for IBM. The company became the supplier of operation system software for IBM, which was the major manufacturer of PCs at the time. In the 1980s, the company became the major provider of OS for PCs taking the dominant position in the market, which the company retains today, for 9 out of 10 PCs use Microsoft OS (). At the same time, the company expanded its products offering Microsoft Office and other software. The rise of internet stimulated the business expansion of Microsoft and the company issued internet-related software, which was built-in in its operation systems as well as it was sold separately, especially after lawsuits and anti-trust investigations. In the second half of 2000s, the company shifted its focus toward mobile devices developing OS and software for laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Today, the company holds the leading position as the major provider of OS for PCs and expands its business steadily. On the other hand, the company faces problems with the accelerated development of mobile devices’ market, where Microsoft faces substantial problems confronting a strong competition from the part of Apple. In such a way, the company holds the leading position in the high tech industry but still confronts numerous challenges as technologies keep progressing fast and Microsoft has to keep pace with their progress.
