This work is dedicated to the specific topic called “How Diversity and Multiculturalism Affects My Daily Life”. It consists from summarizing and analyzing the information and thoughts, given in different works about this theme. The essay sheds light on the main argument of the definition and determining of term “diversity”. Detailed overview can allow getting the main ideas, advantages and disadvantages of a big amount of thoughts and arguments. Our core focus will be on the determining main standpoints of such questions: a self-assessment of defining diversity and multiculturalism, how diversity and multiculturalism affects my daily life, social implications and its relation to your business or job and other. Thus, I am going to show and illustrate all sides of topic through this paper.
Keywords: diversity, multiculturalism, social implications.
Talking about diversity we should learn a lot of conformed to this theme literature in order to understand all the difficulties. However, this definition is not new, each of us, at least, once has heard it. Contemporary laws forbid employees’ harassment, discrimination, and persecution for such reasons, like: age, racial or ethic origin, sexual orientation, religion or belief. Every organization should judge for justice. In my work, I am going to appraise the business case of the diversity. First, let us say what the diversity is.
In consequence, nowadays the question of diversity became more popular and scientific interests are increased in this way. A big variety of diversity literature is appeared; it contains a few approaches and dilemmas. According to the Gill Kirton’s book, Diversity management is seemed to refer to the planned and systematic organizations’ commitment, which means recruiting and retaining employees from diverse demographic backgrounds. Diversity can be defined as the variety of experiences and perspective, which arise from differences in race, culture, religion, mental or physical ability. These problems are not touching only upon discrimination but they change the nature and require placed on leadership and management, and bring fame to the diversity conception. How well or how prepared managers are able to invest in the diversity conception will affect not only on work problems but also on sensitivity to business’ ethical issues, legal compliance, customers’ demand, profitability and social unite.
Organizations that employ a diverse workforce benefit from it, because those companies that have utilize and value such workforce (both men and women, people of different race and generation, religion or belief) are better equipped and informed to understand the demographics of the marketplace it serves. Thus, this company is more likely to succeed than a company that has limited circle of employee demographics. In compliance with the opinion of Cornelius (et al., 2001), we can name four main organizational benefits. They are such: taking preferences of the inequality in the labour market; increasing to maximum potential of employees; managing across borders and cultures; creating and rendering business opportunities and improving creativity.
Indubitably, diversity is important for the organizations and the members of it too. Undeniably, diversity brings benefits such as improving of solving the problems and better decision making, greater and more interesting results, finding new ideas, which caused the enhancing of product development, and makes it more successful and let to be useful to all types of customers. For organizations, it means having ability to compete in world markets.
Diverse organizations are more successful and profitable when they have a normal amount of communication within them. It can be explained by the fact that people from various cultures receive information in messages using different ways. Lack of communication inside the diverse workplace can lead to great challenges.
Getting the main idea of “multiculturalism”, should be mentioned, the emergence of the term is strongly associated with a growing realization of the unintended social and cultural consequences of large-scale immigration. The multiculturalism can be defined as the acceptance or even promotion of multiple ethnic cultures, for practical reasons and/or for the sake of diversity, moreover, applied to the demographic appearance of a specific place, traditionally at the organizational level (schools, neighborhood, businesses, cities or nations).
According to the Government of Canada, (2001), multiculturalism ensures that all citizens can keep their identities, can take pride in their ancestry and have a sense of. Traditionally, it is defined as a kind of social Doctrine. It, however, distinguishes itself as a positive alternative for policies of assimilation, connoting a politics of recognition of the citizenship rights and cultural identities of ethnic minority groups. Moreover, in general, distinguishes itself as an affirmation of the value of cultural diversity. As far as I am concerned, in the United States of America, multiculturalism came into wide public use during the early 1980s, it means in the context of public (state) school curriculum reform. Further still, school curricula were criticized for their so-called Eurocentric bias and their failure to acknowledge the achievements of women, people of color, or people from outside the tradition of Western civilization. Overall, multiculturalism is criticized by few scientists for its implicit assumption that ”˜”˜ethnic groups” are the inherent proprietors of ”˜”˜culture” and that ”˜”˜cultures” are fixed and static realities. Seeing it as encouraging separatism and as a threat to national unity and social cohesion, can make you think critically and be against it, as well. Stratton (1998) stated, “Multiculturalism (“community of communities”) was widely criticized by conservatives as a recipe for the balkanization of society. In the United States of America, multiculturalism was similarly attacked for promoting national division” (“Understanding the 1996 Census Migration Data, Journal of the Australian Population Association”). Furthermore, multiculturalism is believed to be based on a “cult of ethnicity” and an “obsession with difference”, however, unsettling “the balance between unum and pluribus”. Critically, a nation needs a common culture, if it wants to function peacefully. It is usually being debated whether the multicultural ideal of benignly co-existing cultures that interrelate and influence one another, and yet remain distinct, is sustainable, paradoxical or perhaps desirable. It is also believed that it can result in some restrictions in the rights and freedoms for some groups, in consequence, it is bad for democracy and undemocratic and against universal human rights.
The purpose of this part of the essay is to determine social implication’s meaning. What does a social implication mean? It, however, can be defined as how does what you do affect how society will treat you. Moreover, it can be said to be the effects of events, particularly those of a detrimental nature, on social life as a whole. I truly believe company, implicating themselves positively in the community, is successful, because doing a moral obligation. The challenge is to do it each time the opportunity presents itself. However, a number of social implications obviously arise from the fact that it is now possible to predict, which infants are more likely to be intellectually delayed later in life. It is possible, that the most salient implication is one that the lead-time for the prospective study of the causes of mental retardation has been greatly reduced. As far as I am concerned, one social policy implication of an interpretation is that if we wish to understand the differences in the knowledge tapped on IQ tests that produces differences in performance between Blacks and Whites, we must discover the cultural practices that influence the teaching of particular kinds of knowledge. The implication is that the source of Black-White differences in IQ is to be sought in the culture.
