The Sierra Club is an ecological association of the United States of America, founded in San Francisco, California, by John Muir in 1892. It was the first nongovernmental organization to dedicate itself to protecting the environment.
Objectives of the Sierra Club are:
– Explore and protect the wild places of the planet.
– Putting into practice and promotion of responsible use of resources and ecosystems on the planet.
– Educating and inviting people to protect the environment.
– Use every legal means to achieve their goals
The Sierra Club is run by a Board of Directors consists of fifteen volunteers. Each year, five Directors are elected for a period of three years, all members of the Club are entitled to vote. Each year, the Office of the Directors shall elect a chairman from among its members receiving a small fee. The Executive Director directs the daily operations of the group and he is employed. All members of the Sierra Club also belong to sections, generally covering the area of a state, and local groups. There are also thematic groups and task forces of national and local. The political lines of the Sierra Club are set at the appropriate level, but the Club has a position. As well, besides the active volunteers, the Sierra Club has approximately 500 employees. Most of them work at the headquarters of San Francisco, California, but some are also active in Washington (lobbying) and in regional offices, as described in Sierra Club.
Policies for environmental protection. The Sierra Club official policy lines on many issues concerning the protection of the environment. “The policy lines are grouped into seventeen categories: agriculture, biotechnology, energy, environmental justice, forest and wilderness management, global issues, government and political matters, land management, military issues, nuclear issues, oceans, pollution and waste management, precautionary principle, transport, urban and rural policies, water resources and protection of wildlife”, as stated in Clean Water Network.
The Sierra Club is the oldest and largest conservation organization in the U.S. It was created on 28 May 1892 in San Francisco, California, founded by conservationist John Muir, and some professors from the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University. John Muir was also its first president until 1914. It is headquartered in San Francisco. The Sierra Club has about 730,000 members in the U.S. The Sierra Club of Canada, with 10,000 members, is connected to it. The motto of the organization is: “Explore, enjoy and protect the planet.” From 1934 to 1971, the photographer Ansel Adams was a member of the Board. After him a prize for photography is named each year since 1971, awarded by the Sierra Club.
